As a teacher of Yoga and the Feldenkrais Method, Dan’s ultimate goal is to help you develop an intimate and respectful relationship with your body, as well as remind you to slow down and take things easy every once in a while.
Despite being a body-centred practice, Dan’s teachings also have wonderful meditative elements. By getting you to slow down and focus on your movements, he encourages you to put busy thoughts aside and return to a state of stillness. In Dan’s sessions, you can expect to be fully immersed in the Feldenkrais tradition. By guiding you through slow, simple, and repetitive movements, Dan encourages total body awareness to detect unnecessary muscular effort. Quite often, pain and immobility arise from the habitual ways we sit, tense, walk, and stand. But through repeated sequences of motion, Dan looks to create new habits and alternative ways of moving that improve the body’s function.
With over 1000 Feldenkrais lessons available, Dan draws from a wealth of material to provide diverse and vitalising classes, all of which help to better understand the body from a holistic perspective. For example, if targeting flexibility and fluidity in the hip, Dan will incorporate exercises that involve working with the shoulder given their connection, reminding you along the way to take an effortless approach to each movement. Throughout the session, Dan will also get you to check in on your body’s sensations, allowing you to sense where pent-up tension has been released as we move between flows.
Although a gentle practice, Dan’s Feldenkrais classes are a perfect complement to more strenuous physical activity. Over the years, he has incorporated Feldenkrais techniques into his Yoga sessions, helping his clients (even the most advanced) deepen their yoga asanas and ease into difficult postures. There is no preparation necessary before your session. All you need to do is show up, be present and have an open mind. You will be more comfortable if you avoid eating a full meal for an hour or two before class and be sure to hydrate well before and after.
